Assessment Criteria:
To achieve a satisfactory result, your assessor will be looking for your ability to demonstrate the following key skills/tasks/knowledge to an acceptable industry standard:
• Gathering and interpretion of information on production processes
• Analysing information from a range sources such as professional literature, contracts, discussions and workshops
• Identifying, build and use network and support groups
• Adoption profitable innovations
• Set production targets and objectives
• Identify environmental controls and codes of practice available to the organisation sustainable management practices
• Identify biosecurity and Quality Assurance requirements
• Identify work health and safety hazards
1. Plan for production
a. Provide a description of the land class and production capability of land resources utilised in your livestock production system. Explain why this land class is suitable for the livestock production system.
b. Document the water resource used to maintain the grazing system. Provide detail on the source and volume capability, storage and delivery system. Include information on quality and the benefit or limitation it places on the grazing system.
c. Document the livestock production targets for the livestock production include sale dates and weight and age of product sold.
d. Establish production targets, taking into consideration enterprise short and long term livestock production goals, herd/flock breeding improvements and relevant risk control strategies
e. Document the genetics traits required for the livestock to meet the production targets. In clude the EBV's that you would consider when selecting bulls. Document the traits you would use to select the replacement heifers and describe why these traits are selected.
2. Production Plan
a. Document a livestock production plan that incorporates the calendar of operations for your livestock operation. This should include; Breeding operation - Joining, calving, weaning, vaccination dates, sales. Fattening operation - Buy in, quaranteen, vaccination, growth/weight monitoring, sale dates. Outline how you get your animals to that weight for age to limit product outside that market specifications.
b. Document the feed requirements for your herds. Include requirements at different stages of the production cycle, feed quality that enables appropriate weight gains, supplements for various times of the year to ensure growth rates/weight gains to reach market goals.
c. Document an issue that you have experienced caused by a climate event (ie dry spell) that has made it difficult to get your animals to market and meet specifications and the contingency management plan (supplement feeding, ajistment etc) you have implemented to overcome this problem.
d. Document you herd health program that outlines disease prevention through vaccination. Include a brief outline of the diseases you are controlling the effects on your herd if not controlled. ie reproductive diseases, nutritional diseases, Clostridial diseases.
e. Document a schedule for purchasing consumables that coinsides for the time of year it will be used. (supplements, vaccines, medications, tags, marking etc)
3. Develop a gross margin for a previous sale of livestock from your enterprise to assess production performance. (This can be extracted from your previous assessments completed in the business units).
4. Quality Assurance
a. Document your quality assurance program that you implement on your property. This could be developed from your The Livestock Production Assurance (LPA) program is the Australian livestock industry's on-farm assurance program covering food safety, animal welfare and biosecurity. It need to cover all aspects that you are required to meet being apart of the LPA.
5. Yard design
a. Select a design or develop a design that would be suitable for the production process. Explain how the design minimises stress on the animal during processing, how it minimises work health and safety hazards for staff, and complies with environmental regulations regarding yard design.
