Question: Evaluate the cultural values of the AngloSaxon context in which Beowulf was produced and reproduced for several centuries.

Assignment: Compose a four-word essay following APA guidelines in which you articulate your personal evaluation of the values, goals, and qualities most admired in this pre-literate, pagan-to-Christian-transitional AngloSaxon culture. Keeping in mind that Beowulf was a role model, as well as a figure of nightly "entertainment" for the scop's audiences, think about the similarities and differences between the attributes of the AngloSaxon heroes and those we deem heroes in our 2020 American entertainment culture. Likewise, consider how Beowulf's representation of idealized and demonized women differs from the way women are represented in today's entertainment context. [If you watch a Beowulf film rather than reading the Heaney text, be advised that Angelina Jolie's portrayal of Grendel's mother in the 2007 CGI film Beowulf does NOT represent the saga's depiction of an AngloSaxon woman.]
