Chase Stemper just graduated from college, and just accepted a job as a salesperson with channel 6, the local CBS tv broadcasting company. In his new role, he is responsible for selling advertising to businesses and organizations in a five-county area.
Chase really loves technology and social media and uses it every chance he gets. Given his love for tools, he decided to use them to try and build his sales. Here are some activities that chase did in the first week on the job:
He sent emails to every prospect in the list supplied by his company and included several large PDF files that showcased his product's. He copied and pasted the email addresses using the "cc" option. His opening line was "you've never met me before, so I wanted to introduce myself to you."
He used his personal Facebook page, which he always kept updated while in college to tell of his loves and pursuits of girls, and tried to connect with as many of His prospects as he could discover using the "search for friends" option of Facebook. To help make his page more appropriate for his prospects, he took pictures of himself outside the TV's office building, pointing at the large CBS sign. His grin was a mile long.
He got LinkedIn 2 as many prospects as he could. He also started posting articles on his LinkedIn that he thought might be useful to his prospects and running their own businesses. His LinkedIn profile remained sparse because he never did see much use in filling out things like his work experience, current job, and interests.
He had to inform one customer that the advertisement that was supposed to run on NFL Sunday Night Football was being pulled, due to CBS taking that spot to run a promotion for a news series. Chase used email to let the customer know.
He sent out the following tweet using his personal Twitter account: "looking to do some TV advertising in the region? I've got some great rates! call me at xxx or email at xxx right away! Chase"
He used his Facebook page to link friends to his Instagram photos and videos, he made sure that on his Instagram page he put photos and videos of some of the ads that were broadcasted by his station. The purpose was to hopefully generate interest in advertising by prospects.
Since he had the personal cell Phone number of one of the customers that he was given in his new role, he decided to just send a text that read: "how's it going today, George? I'm your new salesperson at the station. Let's have lunch."
one of the customers he was given to service at the station had asked for a quote for two 30 second ads on Friday night around 8:00. chase, using email, wrote this: "Friday night is busy and crowded. Will put together a quote ASAP, but FYI, it's going to take a bit to get the motor going."
1. Given what you know about best practices, evaluate the appropriateness of the activities listed.
2. How can a salesperson keep updated with what the norms are for the various social media and technology tools?
