Assignment - Digital Signal and Image processing
This assignment has two parts:
1- Work plan: Need to submit a work plan which should provide a detailed planning by splitting the tasks into smaller pieces and provide a direction for you to complete the assignment .
2-The report solutions is 12 pages excluding appendices and references. Citations and Reference should follow Harvard-Coventry style.
Introduction - This is an individual assignment focused on providing an in-depth understanding of signal and image processing system implementation. It also demands the measurement of effectiveness of the system implemented in terms of its performance parameters and specifications. You need to submit a work plan which should provide a detailed planning by splitting the tasks into smaller pieces and provide a direction for you to complete the assignment as per schedule.
Outcomes of the assignment
1. Model and synthesis filters for noise reduction for different types of noise and signals.
2. Critically evaluate techniques for image enhancement applications.
3. Know about legal requirements and ethical issues in capturing and analyzing digital images.
Assignment tasks -
Task 1 -
i. In a home security system, it is required to detect presence of moving objects in a room. Develop a real time system in Matlab to detect the presence of moving objects when it is switched ON. Write a detailed report on the procedure used with a flowchart.
ii. Once any moving object is detected, the system should play a recorded voice message through the speakers connected.
iii. If the security system is not switched on, the system should work as only a CCTV (closed circuit television) system which stores the image.
Task 2 -
Analyse the requirements of image capturing devices used in signal processing applications. What are the legal and ethical aspects to be followed while capturing or copying images.
Task 3 -
Realize suitable Matlab functions to add different types of noises specified. Function should generate error message if wrong arguments are passed. To generalize the function if optional arguments are not given as input, a default value can be set. Appropriate comments must be included in the program.
i. Colored noise - function should accept arguments containing signal, Signal to noise ratio (SNR) in dB (optional argument), signal power (optional argument), center frequency and bandwidth of noise spectrum.
Hint: If signal power is specified as an argument, signal should be scaled to the desired level and before noise is added. Use SNR= last two digits of your college ID, and bandwidth = sum of last four digits of your college ID (KHz).
ii. Fading effect - function should accept arguments containing signal, signal power (optional argument), delay and scale factors (Maximum 4 delayed components).
Hint: If signal power is specified as an argument, signal should be scaled to the desired level and before noise is added. Hint - you may assume Y(n)=x(n)+scale1*x(n-delay1)+ scale2*x(n-delay2)+...
Task 4 -
i. Implement any two edge detection algorithm in Matlab with the help of literature survey (consider at least two relevant journal papers for each algorithm).
ii. Critically analyse the result and derive conclusion about the performance of algorithm implemented in Task 4 part i. based on the quality in terms of images having with sharp and gradual edges.
Task5 -
i. Submit a work proposal stating the methodology, references and algorithms (if applicable, to all tasks 1to 4).
ii. A reflective report based on the industry expert lecture and/ or demonstration of the tasks in Matlab.
