Discussion: Ethics, Oxy, and Purdue Pharma
Discussion Goals
The ethical decisions that businesses make can have a significant impact on society has a whole, whether or not these decisions are legal. Through this discussion, you should be able to take an example of a particular business entity and analyze the ethics of its decision-making. You will also take the concept of business reputation and apply it to your own experiences.
Purpose
This discussion will direct you first to watch two videos. The second video is long, but interesting. After watching the videos, answer the discussion questions. You will then review your classmates answers and make meaningful comments on their responses. You may agree and (respectfully) disagree, but always try to center your comments on ethics, business, and law. After you have completed this discussion, you should have an understanding of how the decisions we make about ethics can have significant impact on business and on society. You should understand how your "ethics" and reputation can affect your business.
Instructions
Initial Post
1. Watch the video "What is Ethics? What is Business Ethics?" as well as "OxyContin - Time Bomb." Both are linked in the materials below.
2. Research the following ethical frameworks for ethical decision making: "duty-based ethics," "outcome-based ethics," "moral minimum," and "triple bottom line."
3. Please post a "reply" to this prompt for your initial post with answers to all of the following Discussion Questions:
? Evaluate Purdue Pharma's decision making as portrayed in the "Time Bomb" video. Employ one of the ethical frameworks that you researched (as part of #2 above) in your analysis.
? Who do you hold responsible for the drug crisis that started with Oxy? Can you think of other individuals, companies, or industries that have been significantly impacted by (un)ethical decision making?
? Purdue Pharma's reputation has undoubtedly been affected by the news coverage surrounding the opioid crisis. Give an example of when you made a decision to do or not to do business with someone based on their reputation. (Hint think of "reviews").
4. In each response, please restate the question as a heading before your answer.
5. Remember that the discussion post and replies to your classmates should be in your own words. Do not copy/paste from other websites or sources unless you attribute the source.
