Assignment Brief
Scenario
You are working as an apprentice design technician with a Project management company. The directors of the organisation would like to explore the use of Modern Methods of Construction (MMC'S) as an alternative strategy for delivering projects for their client's. You have been tasked with undertaking a project to explore contemporary MMC's particularly with regards as to how these methods can help to enhance the company's Strategic Sustainability policy.
Learning Outcomes 1 & 2 Preparing and planning the project.
You must select an appropriate construction-based project so that the practicalities of your research can be applied. You can select from the following options:
- A project from your own workplace that has utilised MMC' or how you think MMC's would have provided a viable alternative.
- Consider a housing unit from any area (say Bath, Taunton, Bristol etc.) and detail how MMC's helped to successfully achieve the client's goals for sustainability?
- Use the RICS document ‘Modern Methods of Construction' this can be downloaded at the link below. Select one of the projects from this document and explore how Modern Methods of Construction were used and how they contributed to sustainability throughout the project delivery.
Once you have identified the project you wish to explore you need to justify the selection of this project in terms of meeting the requirements of this unit and the use of MMC's in construction to achieve greater sustainability. Your justification must state how you are going to answer the question. To do this, you need to identify the component parts of your report for example Introduction, produce a video or blog, research, data collection etc. Against each of these components provide an explanation of how these should lead to a successful project outcome.
In order to manage the project within the parameters of the academic year you must identify the resources you intend to use and how long in terms of time each component part of the project will take, identifying any costs associated. Produce a Gantt chart for a period of 80 weeks and use the component parts of the assignment as your activities and produce an initial programme. Remember this is an initial programme and my need to be re-edited as the project progresses. As part of your submission, you should provide your initial programme and any further modified editions.
Evaluate how the early identification of your project and project planning will impact on the scope of the project and the time and resources to be allocated.
Learning Outcomes 3 & 4 Managing the Project and Project Delivery
You need to begin compiling your report - the report should be approximately 5,000 words - consider the impact of MMC's on Project management strategies in the delivery of your report, for example SWOT analysis of different MMC's, Supply chains, resource management and impact on construction programme. The report will utilise appropriate reference and citation.
Your report will then be presented to a small group of your cohort and other members of staff. For this you can use Power-point, Teams, video, or any other medium deemed to be suitable for a professional presentation.
Finally, you must appraise your own performance in the execution of the project to do this you must consider the initial project planning and the identified components of your assignment identified in Learning outcomes 1 and 2 and then the final outcome the project itself and the presentation - was the initial planning useful? And did it help in achieving the goals of the individual project? Consider what you did well and what you did not so well from this you should be able to draw conclusions and make recommendations as to how your own performance could improve in the future when asked to carry out another project.
