Capstone Project : Change Management
To complete this assignment, you should:
• Follow the link to download the case.
• Carefully read the case.
• Review the questions listed below.
• Prepare a brief (no more than 10 minute) presentation directed to Cheryl Dorsey, the President of Echoing Green. Your actual audience will be Randy Iden, MSC alumni, some MSC staff, and in some cases another MSC faculty member. You should address Randy as Ms. Dorsey.
• Prepare presentation slides to accompany your oral presentation
• Prepare a brief (1-2) page summary (leave-behind) of your advice to Ms. Dorsey.
Presentation
You are advising Cheryl Dorsey on how to make changes at Echoing Green. In your presentation, you should answer the following questions as carefully and completely as you can in the allotted time:
1. Using material from your MSC classwork so far, as well as the information in the case, describe and assess the factors that caused Dorsey to institute organizational changes and the internal strengths and weaknesses that impacted Echoing Green's ability to effectively
respond. In other words, what challenges did Echoing Green have and what cultural factors affected the organization's ability to make necessary changes.
2. Evaluate Ms. Dorsey's change management efforts. What style of leadership did she demonstrate? Do you agree with the choices she made?
3. At the end of the case, the consultant hired by Dorsey asks her what direction she wants to take the organization. Putting yourself in Dorsey's shoes, what would advise her to do? List no more than three (3) action steps that she should prioritize over the next six months.
You should assume that your audience is familiar with the facts of the case and you should be careful to limit your retelling of the story. Instead, you should invest your time in making a persuasive appeal to Cheryl Dorsey, which will help her understand the challenges of change management and the best practices in this case.
It is expected that you will use specific concepts and material from the MSC classes you have taken this quarter (particularly your core class, but wherever possible, the elective class as well).
Create a visual aid for your presentation in the form of a deck of presentation slides (Powerpoint, Prezi or the equivalent). Your deck should be designed to accentuate your oral presentation. It should be well-constructed, but need not exhibit any advanced graphics or elaborate demonstration. Please be aware of the 10-minute time limit; you will be stopped once you have exceeded your allotted time.
You must properly cite any sources you use. If you are using material from class and do not have the original source material, it is generally sufficient for this project to cite the class where the concept was described. For example, Situational Crisis Theory (as described in Randy Iden's Strategic Communication class.).
Bring your presentation on a flash drive and be prepared for some questions from the panel. Advice Summary (Leave-behind)
You should write a 1-2 page summary leave-behind of the advice you are providing to Ms. Dorsey. This summary can be written in paragraph form, as a series of bullet points or as an outline.
It should be crafted to elegantly summarize your analysis and recommendations. Do not attempt to put your entire presentation in the leave-behind.
Rather you should draft a document that will creatively help your audience (Cheryl Dorsey) to recall the most important points of your presentation after you have left the room.
Do not try to put too much information in the leave-behind. Use varied text size, white space and other design elements to call the reader's attention to the most important elements of your advice.
You should have four copies of this leave-behind to distribute after you have completed your oral presentation
