Assignment Description
Assume Ubuntu Networks is a regional mobile communication network in Nepal. It has 4G spectrum and has need to develop a network which services the region around Mount Everest. Unfortunately Mount Everest creates unnecessary and significant diffraction which makes it impossible to communicate from one side of the mountain to the other side. Your responsibility as the design engineer is to design the section of the network around the mountain. For this exercise the interest is to establish a base station each side of the mountain to be able to communicate so that tourists climbing the mountain can receive mobile communication signals well and communication is possible also on either side of the Mount Everest.
Undertake your system design and provide the following details in a report to the Chief Engineer of Ubuntu networks within the next four weeks.
1) A diagram depicting the diffraction knife edge created by the highest point of Mount Everest. The correct height of the peak point of the mountain must be given (height of knife edge).
2) The distance between the two base stations on either side of the mountain must be given by you so that communication can be established. Include the heights of the base stations which will enable diffraction from the knife edge
3) Using the distance in 2) plot the profile of the earth bulge around Mount Everest using K=4/3 (terrestrial communication). Include the Matlab code for this part of the assignment.
4) Using the appropriate Fresnel-Kirchhoff diffraction parameter equations, establish the value of the diffraction loss as given in the lecture in ME602. Note, you need to calculate the value of
5) Download the topographical map of the region around Mount Everest sketch the values of refractivity index from the foot of the mountain to its highest peak. Estimate the refractive index on top of Mount Everest on a day in September. This date must be given in your report showing the regional climatic conditions on that day.
6) Calculate and report how much power correction you need to make for diffraction loss. Which method for estimating the diffraction loss do you think is better as used in your report (Deygout, Burlington, Vogler, Epstein-Peterson etc - which one?)
