Assignment: The purpose of this assignment is for learners to familiarize themselves with prominent social movement leaders and activists in Canadian and Global social movement contexts. Learners will research and present on an individual whose work has shaped or contributed to socially just societies. If learners choose, they can work in pairs (2 people) to complete this assignment, but all work must be completed collaboratively. Learning Outcomes Assessed:
• Examine and apply leadership models, theories, strategies, types, and styles to understand their influence on advocacy movements.
• Evaluate leadership characteristics and skills in self and others in the advancement of social justice through advocacy in diverse early childhood communities.
Assignment Steps: 1. Choose a social movement activist or leader as the focus of your assignment. In Learning Module 2 you will be introduced to many activists and leaders from intersecting social movements throughout Canadian history.
2. You will write a 2-4-page research report on your chosen activist or leader. Conduct your research using Internet searches, Humber Library Discover Bar, the Canadian Encyclopedia website and course readings/ resources (a minimum of 3 credible sources are required). Your final research report must present the following factual information: A. Brief biographical information: Focus on key details, especially those that illuminate the leader's commitment to social justice and transformation. Details on their early family/work life that are significant to their leadership and advocacy commitment may be included. B. Key contributions to Canadian and/or Global social movements such as Child Care Advocacy Movements, Women's Movements, Indigenous Rights Movements, LGBTQ Movements, Disability Rights Movements, Human Rights Movements, Anti-Racist Movements and so on. This may include: a demonstration of work that has sought to create social change to benefit key stakeholders (i.e., children, families, the ECE profession, communities/society particularly as it relates to issues of diversity, inclusion, social justice, and the empowerment of equity-seeking groups); Advocacy; Research projects the leader has undertaken; Authorship of notable articles, books, other writings, etc. C. Leadership style(s) & supporting rationale (why) (connected to Ren-Etta Sullivan, 2010) and traits/characteristics supporting social justice (connected to Sykes, 2014).
3. Design a one-page creative poster based on your research report. You can be as creative as you wish, but if you design your poster by hand you must be able to scan and upload the finished document to the Blackboard Dropbox. There are many free online programs that you can use to create your poster (Canva, Piktochart, Adobe Spark, etc.) as well as Microsoft Word and PowerPoint. The poster should draw the viewer in with titles and headings, images, graphics, descriptions and pertinent information to provide an accurate overview of the activist or leader. Include in-text citations for any information taken from your report and additional citations for images/graphics used in the poster. Any additional citations for images/graphics should appear in your report's Reference List. Submission Checklist: o 2-4-page research report includes factual information (supported by credible sources) about the life and work of a specific activist or leader involved in a social movement. o Report is well-researched, well-written, uses headings where appropriate and is free of spelling and/or grammatical errors. o One-page poster based on your report is creative, easy to read and comprehend and provides a clear overview of the activist or leader. The report includes in-text citations wherever necessary and a complete reference list following APA format. The reference list must also include a full reference for any images/pictures or content included in your poster that is additional to the sources in your written report. o Submission Format: - In one document:
