The homeland department would utilize several intelligence sources to collect and evaluate information from al-Qaeda. First, Open Source Intelligence would be critical in collect intelligence information. This type of intelligence source provides individuals with public information regarding al-Qaeda and possibly the operation of al-Qaeda. However, the information gathered from this type of source is general information; it is valuable given that it would be vital in profiling and connecting intelligence dots on al-Qaeda members (Central Intelligence Agency, 2018). Such information is also critical in helping the department to understand the world view of al-Qaeda and the perceptions people have.
Furthermore, information that is collected during the intelligence cycle is vital in developing a general intelligence. According to the Federation of American Scientists, the information collated together after field intelligence makes the best intelligence available. Through imitation of the scientists, information can be collected in open source intelligence, human signals, measurements and signals, and imagery. This information brings into the table bits of data, which, if collated, can be powerful intelligence to make predictions and patterns to stop the terrorists. This type of intelligence source is vital because it allows the homeland department to collect different facets of information that would help understand the target group and its operations.
Additionally, to examine a possible threat, intelligence sources can include photographs received from satellites, spy material, media reports, and intercepted communications. Although intelligence may take different forms, including secret papers, radar signatures for ships, and monitoring videos, standard criteria link different types of information with each other. Such would help gather intelligence sources against al-Qaeda and what they plan to do in the MENA region. In addition, such would help control for any plans that al-Qaeda would have designed.
