Assignment Task - Holocaust Research/Essay

Task Description: Your task is to evaluate the impact of Nazi anti-Semitic laws on the Jewish community in Germany and the German occupied territories 1933-1945. Evaluate means to make a judgment on exactly how much impact Nazi laws had on the Jewish community. To do this you need to consider the various laws and actions taken against Jewish people at different times. You also need to consider the role of Nazis and non-Nazi people - some were perpetrators or collaborators, some were silent bystanders. Some tried to save Jewish people despite the risks -they are called Righteous Gentiles.

You will complete this assessment in three phases:

  • Conducting research and preparing evidence - hand in Scaffolds B-D.
  • Preparing to write the extended response by filling out Scaffold A (a letter of concern will be sent in event of non-submission).
  • Sit an in-class task to write 1 extended written response (using PEEL paragraphs) based on the understanding you gained from completing the scaffolds. (time to complete in class task 50 minutes).

1) Only from the list in attached file, choose one person (e.g. Irena Sendler) or a group of people (e.g. Zegota) from the Righteous Among the Nations list as identified by Yad Vashem

Note - Chosen Gertruilda Wijsmuller and the Kindertransport for Scaffold B. He's also chosen Source E and Source H for Scaffold D.

Research your chosen Righteous Gentile/group to begin to understand how bystanders acted. Use attached Scaffold B to help you. Write (or type) in your own words into the table scaffold. Later, you will use this information to write a PEEL Paragraph to answer the essay question.

Suggestions for locations of reliable information include:

- The Sydney Jewish Museum

- The Shoah Foundation

- US Holocaust Memorial Museum

2) Analyse two sources from the provided options. Use Scaffold D. From research, class work and your own knowledge come to a deep understanding of what each piece of evidence reveals about the impact of Nazi laws and ideology on the Jewish community.

3) Use the Venn diagram (Scaffold C) to begin to brainstorm events/people/laws/actions that reveal the impact of Nazi anti-Semitic laws on the Jewish community in Germany and the German occupied territories from 1933-1945. Consider the differences between bystanders, collaborators and perpetrators. Consider change over time as well - the 1930s vs 1942 onwards.

4) Prepare to answer an extended response during an in-class test by filling out Scaffold A.

How to Prepare for this Task -

  • Conduct research, analyse sources and fill in Scaffolds B-D.
  • Plan using the provided extended response scaffold A.
  • Keep track of sources of information and write a bibliography.
  • Adjust work based on class teacher feedback prior to in-class component.
  • Practice writing PEEL paragraphs to answer extended response on: Evaluate the impact of Nazi anti-Semitic laws on the Jewish community in Germany and the German occupied territories 1933-1945.
