Introduction:

1: TEMPORARY WORKS SAFETY

Aim: The aim is to promote awareness and knowledge of the importance of managing temporary works; improving contractors' management arrangements of temporary works; increasing the competence of those engaged in temporary works management and design; and reducing accidents arising from temporary works failures.

Background: Temporary works is defined in BS5975: 2008 "Code of practice for temporary works procedures and the permissible stress design of falsework" as "(those) parts of the works that allow or enable construction of, protect, support or provide access to, the permanent works and which might or might not remain in place at the completion of the works". Examples of temporary works include, but are not limited to: Earthworks - trenches, excavations, temporary slopes and stockpiles. Structures - formwork, falsework, propping, façade retention, needling, shoring, edge protection, scaffolding, temporary bridges, site hoarding and signage, site fencing, and cofferdams.

Question: Failure to adequately design, construct and maintain temporary works can lead to collapse or failure of the temporary works. Discuss using one of the types of temporary works and identify a new safety innovation(s); images can be used.

2: WORK RELATED MENTAL HEALTH, STRESS & FATIGUE

Aim: The aim is to improve construction industry wellbeing through critical review of the development of the antecedents; behaviour and consequences for capturing early signs of stress, fatigue and mental health of construction workers.

Background: Improving worker health is often neglected or not given the priority it needs, compared to safety. This may be for a number of reasons, including the long-term manifestation and nature of ill-health and the associated costs of prevention and health surveillance. It is believed that mental health, stress, fatigue and wellbeing of workers is a critical element for the overall improvement of Occupational Safety and Health (OSH). Therefore, this submission should be able to address on-going human, work related, economic and socio-cultural issues associated with mental health, stress and fatigue of workers.

Question: Critically evaluate how capturing early signs of stress, fatigue and mental health of construction workers can improve Occupational Safety and Health (OSH)
