Introduction

This module will explore and evaluate healthcare leadership considering the theories and frameworks underpinning healthcare leadership and innovative approaches that are required in services that are often under pressure and in some cases, under resourced. This module will equip students with the knowledge and understanding to become effective healthcare leaders who can enhance the quality-of-service provision. This module will consider the theories and concepts of leadership and quality improvement within clinical practice and the policy drivers that support leaders to make improvements.

Learning outcome 1: Critically appraise leadership theories and their influences on health service provision.
Learning outcome 2: Evaluate the implementation of quality improvement.

Assessment - A critique of the role of quality improvement in transforming healthcare

- In this section of the essay, you should introduce your critiqueand what the main body will cover

LO1. Critically appraise leadership theories and their influences on health service provision.
- Critically evaluate a range of different leadership theories you may employ and the skills and attributes that will benefit you in this role.
- Critically evaluate the role of the leader and how this can influence the service as a result of your exploration of leadership theory.
- Avoid using your word count to solely describe what leadership styles are - consider how elements of leadership styles and theory support your role as a leader in the implementation of service improvement.

- How varied leadership styles may be beneficial/not
- Leading by example and role modelling
- Empowering cultural change
- Leading staff development and supporting staff resilience/reducing risk of burnout
- Essential communication skills for team working.

LO2: Evaluate the implementation of quality improvement.
- Explain what quality improvement is and the importance in healthcare.
- Explore change management theory.
- It is important that your work is supported with relevant literature relating to change management, supervisory practice, quality improvement and governance.
- Some relevant topics could include:
- Implementation and management of change - techniques, models and methods for use in practice
- Ensuring quality enhancement and improvement
- Initiatives and processes of change to support and/or improve staff and patient experience
- Evaluation, audit, quality processes, feedback mechanisms
- Involvement in quality and governance processes, liaising with stakeholders.
- Learning from mistakes
- Relationship between clinical governance and quality care.
