Assignment: Family and Societal Nursing for RNs- Family Nursing Project
The student will conduct an interview of a family (two or more members) who has or is experiencing a transitional, chronic, acute, or critical illness/disorder. The purpose of the interview will be to explore:
1. A description of the family experience with the illness/disorder, or a transitional health experience
2. The challenges in managing the illness/disorder, and
3. Nursing approaches that are/were helpful to the family.
Based on an identified family nursing theory described in your text, course readings and research literature, develop a 12 paged paper following APA format that focuses on:
1. preparing a family interview guide,
2. interviewing a family to explore concepts in the family nursing theory,
3. recording family interview data and summarizing findings from the data,
4. creating family level approaches based on interview data and proposing nursing actions to the family based on SMART goals
5. evaluating the effectiveness of the nursing actions,
6. sending the therapeutic letter to the family as appropriate
7. Reflecting on the student-family follow through experience.
Proposed Visit Schedule
First Visit: Family Intake & Assessment
The student will conduct an interview of a family who has or is experiencing a transitional, chronic, acute, or critical illness/disorder. The purpose of the interview will be to:
1. Practice the One Question Question
2. Obtain the illness story
3. Explore the family experience with the illness/disorder
4. Examine the challenges in managing the illness/disorder
5. Identify family constructs that are relevant to this family
6. Research appropriate family level nursing actions
Second Visit: Family Nursing Actions
The student arranges a second visit that emphasizes the nursing recommendations and nursing actions. Feel free to consult with me if you need guidance. The purpose of the visit will be to:
1. Discuss assessment findings with the family
2. Confirm accuracy of assessment data (Genogram, Ecomap, Circular Conversation, Attachment Diagram as appropriate)
3. Offer family level nursing commendations
4. Apply nursing actions as negotiated with the family, remembering that the more specific this plan in, the better the outcomes (Kaakinen et al., 2018)
Final Visit: Family Response and Follow-up
After consulting with the nursing faculty, the student will be directed to arrange either a face-to-face or a telephone meeting. The purpose of this visit will be to:
1. Assess response to family nursing action
2. Evaluate effectiveness of your family nursing action
3. Evaluate the overall experience
4. Provide closure for terminating your professional relationship, as you deem appropriate, which may include writing a therapeutic letter.
