This is Early childhood education CHCECE001
Kirra's Maternal Health Nurse suggested that her three-year-old daughter Talia would benefit from a couple of days at childcare. Kirra didn't finish school herself and so was keen to give Talia the best chance at doing well at school and getting ahead in life.
Kirra went to investigate the Service in her neighbourhood. The Educator gave her a tour of the Service and she noticed the big posters of different cultures on the walls and the different play areas they had set up based on the different cultures. The Educator keenly pointed out the boomerang in the toddler room and explained how all the children liked to make didgeridoos during NAIDOC Week.
All the staff were friendly, however, Kirra felt embarrassed each time they entered a room and the Educator got everyone's attention to introduce her and Talia. By the time they got to the Pre-School room, Talia was clinging to her leg. The Educator tried to engage with Talia by getting down to her level, so she could make eye contact, however, Talia buried her face further into her mother's leg.
Whilst the Educator was very friendly and provided lots of information about the drop off and pick up procedure, what items needed to be packed each day for Talia, stated personal items needed to be labelled with Talia's name, explained daily routines, the communication book process etc. Kirra started to feel overwhelmed with the information.
The Educator, also asked lots of questions about Talia and the family - food allergies, what activities Talia enjoyed, what activities they did as a family, if Talia had any special needs, if she had any siblings, who was in the extended family, what events did the family enjoy and so on. Kirra felt like the questions were continuous and started to feel flustered as she tried to answer each question.
At the end of the tour, the Educator asked Kirra if she had any questions, however, before she got a chance to talk about their indigenous background the Educator had handed her a folder of application forms to complete and information to read. Kirra felt it was her cue to leave.
Kirra took the folder but started to feel this wasn't such a good idea and that maybe childcare wasn't a good fit for Talia.
- Evaluate the way the Educator has communicated with Kirra and Talia, what areas could be improved on?
- Provide one example of how you have embedded diversity and inclusion in your daily practice whilst working at the Service.
- Provide one example of where you have used effective oral communication to liaise in a different cultural context/situation.
