Assessment 1: Problem Identification and Definition
What you need to do
You need to identify a research problem that you wish to solve and provide the general background and context to this research problem. Your research problem should be expressed as a clear and focused research question. This assessment task is worth 10% of your total grade and should be 500 words long,
+/- 50 words.
Why you need to do this
The aim of this assessment is to identify a suitable research question to be explored in your subsequent literature review and outlined in your research proposal.
Being able to create a clear and focused research question is an essential part of the research process as it provides the researcher a clear and navigable path through the research and writing process.
Criteria
To complete this assessment successfully you will need to include:
• A research question that is clear, focused and is in the form of a question
• Background information that is clear and specific to the research question
• A clear and compelling argument as to your motivation for solving the specific research question.
• A brief overview of the steps involved in conducting the research. These must be achievable within a reasonable amount of time, expenditure and effort.
How it should be done
For this assessment, you will need to:
1. Describe the general background/context, the problem that you want to solve and its importance (project motivation).
2. Write a clear and focused research question (The main question that you want to answer in this project).
3. Look at your research question and answer the following:
a. How have you focused your research question to make sure you can undertake this research with a reasonable expenditure of time, money and effort?
b. Describe the process of solving the problem very briefly in a few steps. You should use these instructions as your headings and subheadings
Assessment 2: Literature Review
What you need to do
For this assessment task you will need to find, evaluate and synthesise the literature relevant to the research problem you have identified. This task is worth 25% of your final grade and should be 800 words in length.
Please note:
• Your reference list is not included in the word count.
• You need to use EndNote for both your in-text citations and your reference list
Why you need to do this
In order to progress to your final research proposal, you need to investigate what research has been done previously in your research area. This investigation should provide the context and the justification for your proposed research. Conducting a literature review demonstrates your understanding and your ability to critically evaluate research in the field.
Criteria
To complete this assessment successfully you will need to:
• Organise and evaluate literature that is relevant to your research area
• Synthesise the current evidence showing a comparison between the literature, identifying any gaps in the research.
• Use EndNote for your reference list and in-text citations
How it should be done
Please provide your research question or updated research question at the beginning of this assessment.
1. Begin by conducting research into your topic area using the Library catalogue and relevant databases
2. Use EndNote to capture the bibliographic details of your information sources as you find them.
3. Evaluate the literature in terms of its relevance to the topic
4. Group the relevant literature according to common themes or ideas
5. Compare and contrast the literature looking for what is similar or what is different
6. Use separate paragraphs, for each of the different themes or ideas.
7. You do not need to have a preview of the topic that you will be talking about in your literature review, or a summary section.
8. You may use headings or subheadings if you want.
Note: It should be electrical field related problem
