Question: Contemporary projects and their teams have become more complex we can now see that breaking a problem into simpler components, studying and solving each part in isolation, and then drawing conclusions about the whole is becoming ineffective. Linear thinking nowadays has increasingly become unproductive as many project are impacted by disruptive business environments thus becoming interrelated and interconnected in ways that are not linear. Problems can arise in any of the following: the work to achieve the project goals; the team itself; and the technology being used. When over simplified, attempts to solve a problem may be unsuccessful because there are unexpected impacts which arise because the intended solution does not take account of the whole problem.
So adopting systems thinking to understand the source and solutions to contemporary project problems is increasingly embraced by organisations. Evaluating and comparing systems theories whilst focussing on their strengths, weaknesses in terms of their business applicability using a systematic literature review. Following this select your own case study to evaluate and critically reflect on the choice of systemic tools to specifically handle sustainability issues in projects.
