Evaluate and assess the article by Qaseem et al, using the JAMA Critical Appraisal worksheet (also attached below). For the article citation - please include at least the 1st two authors, complete title, journal name, volume, pages, and year published - just as you would cite the article in a term paper, presentation, etc. You will have you specify the study question for the assigned article. If there was more than one study question, specify at least the primary question that the investigators studied.
For the questions that refer to "your patient," use the clinical scenario below:
"You are a clinical pharmacist working in an internal medicine clinic in a local, staff model HMO. You see many patients with respiratory/pulmonary conditions, such as asthma, COPD, chronic bronchitis, etc. Today you are seeing a 72 year old Caucasian male patient who has chronic, stable COPD, with respiratory symptoms, and an FEV1 of 73% predicted. He uses short-acting inhaled bronchodilators for occasional, acute symptom relief, and he and his physician are asking you if you would recommend adding an additional, regular inhaled therapy (such as an anticholinergic or long-acting beta agonist) to his regimen, to give him additional benefit. You recently became aware of a clinical practice guideline on the general topic of diagnosis and management of stable, chronic COPD (attached below), and you take a few minutes to read the guideline and see if it can help inform your recommendation to this patient and his physician."
