Thomas Jefferson was the author of the Declaration of Independence and penned, perhaps, the most famous and important line in American history in that document: "We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness." Nevertheless, Jefferson owned 100 slaves at the time and never freed them despite his belief in natural rights. For extra credit, explain one reason Jefferson did not emancipate his slaves or believe in immediate emancipation in general.
