When European Cities Marketing held its annual meeting in Gothenburg, Sweden, in the summer, it was directly across the street from a popular amusement park. The event planners for European Cities Marketing decided to use this strategic location to their advantage and conduct one of their social events at the park. The event began in the early evening with a dinner in one of the park’s restaurants. At the conclusion of the dinner for approximately 200 persons, the organizers announced that at each table there was a team captain and that he or she would wear a funny head dress and lead the other guests at their table on an adventure through the park. The first team to actually complete all the assignments listed on a card that was distributed would win a prize. The assignments included riding various rides, playing carnival games, and other typical activities within the park. The organizer announced, “Ready, set, and go!” and the race was on. The sound of laughter and excitement was deafening as the teams began to fan out throughout the park. The goals of the event were to promote networking and encourage relaxation after a long day of meetings. In addition, it was hoped that a spirit of competition would develop and this rivalry would further increase the bonding among the various teams. It is estimated the cost per person for this event could have been around $100, or $20,000 total. The goals for this event were to promote networking and encourage physical participation. The amusement park promoted CSR through recycling and reuse and encouraged greener travel by being accessible by frequent public transportation. The event planners reduced the carbon footprint for the event by eliminating travel by motor coach and instead instructing the participants to walk to the park, as it was directly across the street from their hotel.

1. How would you have improved the outcomes from this event to further include educational benefits (learning) during the various activities?

2. How would you assess, analyze, plan, manage, and control the risks associated with this sort of event?

3. What additional CSR tactics could be employed in the future?
