What were the major developments in Europe that enabled the Age of Exploration?

A change of wind patterns and oceanic currents brought on by climate change allowed European ships to travel westward faster than ever before. This led to explorers, like Columbus, to figure they could survive a long sea voyage to the East, now that their ships could travel at greater speeds. 

Devices such as the astrolabe and the compass from the East allowed Europeans to navigate further from shore than they had before the Age of Exploration.

New ship design developed by the Portuguese in the late 15th century allowed longer oceanic voyages.
