Question

There are a number of different mutagens that can be used to mutate worms. One of the most common is ethyl methane sulfonate (EMS). This mutagen causes G/C to A/T transitions which can create a number of stop codons. This results in many loss-of-function mutations meaning a gene has lost all function creating a null allele. Explain how EMS can create partial-loss-of- function alleles or temperature-sensitive alleles. To answer this question ask yourself these questions: -What likely happens at the amino acid level to make the protein partially functional? -What type of mutation to the DNA will cause this change? How are mRNA codons affected? -Can EMS mutations create this change?
