The ethic of care is the idea that caring for students is just as important as educating them. In the school where I currently teach, ethics of care is highly important. During my actual interview prior to being hired, my principal told me that making sure my students are fed and okay should be number one priority. In my own personal opinion, caring for my students and building relationships with them is a huge part of being an educator. Without building that rapport with my students, I think that they would be less likely to listen to the things I had to say. They would not care about me because they would feel that I did not care about them.

Having solidarity with students means to show support for them. It means to create a feeling of mutual respect between one another. All students want is to know that they are supported by the people that they care about the most. Because we are so influential in our students lives, it is vital to have solidarity with out students. Empathy means to understand the feeling that our students have and at times share those feeling with them. In the area I teach, my students have experienced a lot of heartbreak. They have rough home lives and background stories. I have to show empathy often for my students and the things they deal with on a daily basis.

We never know the full extent of what out students face when they leave school every day. We never know the depth of their values and culture. It is important to value each and every one of our students and show them that we respect who they are as individuals and that we respect how they differ from one another. The environment we create for our students can make or break their success in education. We must take into account the things they face outside of school as well as the things they may experience in our care as well.
