Part 1: Choose a Broad Topic
Select a broad topic of interest within the field of psychology. This can be any topic that intrigues you. It could be related to (a) psychology in history (b) Neuroscience (c) Stress, Coping, and Health (d) Human Development (e) Learning (f) Memory (g) Personality (h) Social Psychology (i) Psychological Disorders, or (j) Treatment and/or interventions.
Part 2: Do Some Preliminary Reading on the Topic
Conduct preliminary reading and research on your chosen broad topic. Consult our textbook, online academic journals such as PsycInfo or Google Scholar, or other scholarly sources to familiarize yourself with the current knowledge and research findings related to the topic. Choose three relevant articles. In addition, experiment with ChatGPT (free version is fine). Ask at least three questions/prompts and include your printout. In APA (7th ed.) format please write out the citations for the papers you have chosen, as well as for your Chat GPT information.
Part 3: Narrow Down to a Specific Niche and Identify Research Gaps
Based on your preliminary reading, narrow your broad topic to a specific niche or subtopic. Identify a particular area within your chosen topic that you find interesting and wish to explore further. Consider areas that have limited research or that require further investigation. Think critically about those gaps or unanswered questions within that area. Identify and describe a research problem that you believe needs to be addressed or explored further. This research problem should be specific, focused, and significant to psychology. (150 words max)
Part 4: Write Your Research Question and Propose Research Methods
Formulate a clear and concise research question using the research problem you identified in Part 3. Your research question should be specific, measurable, and feasible to investigate within the scope of this assignment. It should also be relevant and contribute to the existing body of knowledge in psychology. Then, consider some ways you might go about designing a study. Briefly describe one possible research method proposal you could design to answer your research question. (150 words max)
Part 5: Ethical Implications
Finally, I want you to think about the ethical implications of your proposed research method from Part 5. How would you ensure that the four ethical guidelines (below) are respected in your work if you were conducting this research project per your ideas from Part 4 of this assignment? (150 words max)
The Canadian Psychological Association has four ethical principles they request we use as guidelines when conducting research, and/or working with people in the community.
The four principals are:
#1 Respect for the Dignity of Persons and Peoples - How will you respect the rights of the people involved in your research and their right to choose to be involved in your research project?
#2 Responsible Caring - if someone feels distressed after participating in your project, what will/can we do? What resources can we make available to them?
#3 Integrity in Relationships - How do you make sure there is no conflict of interest between yourself as the researcher and your research subjects?
#4 Responsibility to Society - How does your work potentially benefit society or potentially address systemic issues, such as discrimination, within society?
