Question

Two key takeaways stood out to me this week: the profound impact of empathy on patient care and the ethical complexities of advocacy in healthcare. Both films reveal the difficulty patients face when advocating for themselves, especially in vulnerable states. Often, doctors make decisions based on what they believe is best, at times neglecting the patient's own wishes. While Wit resonated more emotionally for me, both films, along with readings from The Patient's Voice, underscore the importance of empathy. In Chapter 11, Gene Higgins reflects, "Each and every time something is to be done, it has to be cleared through channels. I always got the feeling...that there is an overwhelming rush to get you in and out" (Young-Mason, 2015, p. 116). This highlights the need for healthcare professionals to not only listen but actively advocate for patients to foster a more humane and supportive environment.
