Assignment Brief

As a professional engineer you are asked to investigate a focussed case study of an engineering sector company which delivers projects on engineering products or services. You can choose to do this case study on the engineering company which you work for, or a real case study from a B&FC approved industry partner will be given to you if you do not work in industry.

You will need to conduct some research and in-depth investigations into the structure, operations, mission, vision, teams and strategic development planning of the company. Always remain attentive to industry-relevant topics and current developments.

Indicative word length is 2000 words, excluding appendices and front matter. You should reference all sources using the B&FC style guide, including unpublished documents (e.g. internal reports). Your report should include references to all your sources, using standard referencing practice. The format and headings of your report will depend on its contents and will be presented in the customary academic and business standards.

1. Students completing a case study on their own company (self-employed) or on their employer (employed in the engineering industry)

You will investigate whether a suitable business model is used to ensure success and overcome challenges, as well as the kind of change management that will have to be implemented in the short, mid or long-term in order to remain competitive on the market.

To do this, you will identify and critically evaluate the ethical, sustainability, environmental, legal, moral and other factors deemed of importance and associated with the engineering projects the company delivers. You will provide an extended stakeholder analysis and identify strategic points of interest. For this, you will use knowledge and theories from the content of this module as well as knowledge, theory and skills you have previously acquired in Professional Engineering Management, demonstrating your transferrable skills in business analysis applied to engineering companies.

You will propose a change management scenario for this company to improve certain key performance indicators (KPIs) that you may have found lacking. You will support your reasoning with appropriate theoretical frameworks. For the initial company backgrounds study, you will utilise all the models and frameworks for business analysis you think are applicable and appropriate, including them in the appendices to your report. You will develop and critically analyse the blend of models you have used and come to conclusions about the strategic development of the company.

In addition, you will analyse in depth how at least two of the stakeholders you have identified for your case study are impacted through the projects the company delivers.Youwill develop a reasoned strategic plan for any change management these stakeholders, or the relationships with them, may also need. You will develop a change management model that considers human factors and teams, as well as internal and external communication and will conclude with recommendations and a change management plan.

2. Students completing a case study on a B&FC approved industry partner
You will be given a brief by the company which may present itself as a feasibility study or a change management strategic development case. You will need to do research on the company and prepare a set of questions for a consultancy meeting that you will have with representatives of the company. These questions will be focussed on the topics you identify as needing more clarity for the development of your work. Some of this information may be confidential and you may have to sign a legally binding non-disclosure agreement. Your work will have to include ethical, sustainability, environmental, legal, moral and economic considerations. Its main objective will be to provide excellent material to the company which can be used for its project(s).

The appendices must include SWOT and PESTLE Analysis
