ET 350 Experimental Refrigeration Plant: Thermodynamics - University of Greenwich

Objective 1. To demonstrate the application of the First and Second Laws of Thermodynamics

Objective 2. To introduce the student to a refrigerator plant and calculate the Refrigeration capacity (cooling load), condenser capacity (heating load), compressor work input and the coefficient of performance.

Results:

1. From the experimental data acquired, plot the enthalpy value on the P-h chart provided.

2. Use the obtained data to determine the mass flow rate of the refrigerant, the refrigeration and condensation capacity, the electric power consumption and the coefficient of performance. (Sample work on these calculations is provided in the appendix based on the sample data provided in the test observation table).

3. Explain the theory of throttling process used in vapour compression refrigeration system?

4. Investigate a refrigerant that is currently used in industrial refrigeration plant. What is the benefit of using this specific refrigerant? What impact it has on the environment. (Your answer should not be more than 500 words).
