Each of us has an estimated antibody reportoire of 1011. That is 1011 different antibody molecules!!
Before we discovered how this challenge is met, there were two schools of tought:
1.The germline theory suggested that there was a distinct gene for each of the antibody-coding strands.
2.The diversification theory suggested that antibodies are encoded by a limited number of genes that somehow are diversified.
The discovery that the haploid human genome contains roughly 3 billion bases made one of these theories untenable.
Question: calculate the number of immunoglobulin genes that can fit in the haploid human genome. Which of the theories is more plausible?
