Estimating the thickness of a membrane by using bond distance.

The carbon-carbon bond distance for single-bonded carbons, such as those in a saturated fatty acid chain, is about 1.5 A0. Estimate the length of a single molecule of palmitic acid (16:0) in its fully extended form. From this, estimate the thickness of the lipid bilayer in a biological membrane.
