5 mol of an ideal gas are stored in a piston and cylinder arrangement. The cross-sectional area of the cylinder is 0.1 m2, and the initial volume of the ideal gas is 122.3 liter. The surroundings outside the piston are at 1 atm. A 100 kg mass falls off a shelf 5 m above the piston and lands on the piston. The piston and mass bounce up and down until eventually frictional forces bring them to a stop. You can assume that the ideal gas stays at a constant temperature of 25°C.

A) What is the final pressure and volume of the ideal gas?

B) Estimate the amount of energy initially transferred from the mass to the piston and the ideal gas.

C) Estimate the net amount of work done by the mass on the ideal gas, the amount of energy dissipated as friction, and the net heat flow through the walls of the cylinder.

D) Is this a thermodynamically reversible process? Why or why not?
