Estimate the land area (in acres) that must be purchased by a city to construct a new municipal landfill. The city has a stable population of 235,000 residents and the design criteria for the new landfill are as follows: MSW generation rate = 4.0 lb/(person-day); density of the compacted MSW in the landfill is 775 lb/yd3; the average depth of waste in the landfill is 50 ft; landfill life should equal 20 years. Finally, assume that 40% of the total land area must be used for roads, buildings and buffer zones.
