Under some environmental conditions the halophile Halobacterium halobium synthesizes a membrane protein (MW 26,000) bacteriorhodopsin, which is purple because it contains retinal. Molecules of this protein aggregate into purple patches in the cell membrane. Bacteriorhodopsin acts as a light activated proton pump that provides energy for cell functions. X-ray analysis of this protein reveals that it consists of seven parallel alpha-helical segments, each of which transverses the bacterial cell membrane (thickness 4.5 nm=45Å).
a. Calculate the minimum number of amino acids necessary for one segment of alpha-helix to traverse the membrane completely
b. Estimate the fraction of the bacteriorhodopsin protein that occurs in alpha-helical form.
Read the article titled, "Lab ecosystems show signs of evolving." Provide your thoughts on how we could make our ecosystem better. How is our ecosystem affected today
Assume you are attempting to determine if the new DNA sample you have just received contains linear or circular molecules. Digestion using either RsaI or SauI alone produces two fragments.
Consider a human population that is similar to the ideal Hardy-Weinberg population in that it is very large and generally random-mating. Although mutations occur, they alone do not lead to great changes in allele frequencies.
Diagram and explain how two genes with different alleles (A/a and B/b) on different chromosomes go through the process of meiosis.
Can mammals synthesize glucose from the metabolites of amino acids? From the metabolites of lipids? What ramifications does this have on mammal diet?
One day in my fly lab in grad school some friends and I were are arguing about olive oil. The fancy guy of the group started the argument when he brought in his 30$ bottle of Extra-fancy olive oil, which he claimed would induce tongue-gasm.
Major ecological imbalance on Earth is between the human species and the rest of Earth''s biota - What are two specific actions we could do to achieve a balance (for example, recycling)? Here is the critical part:
Discuss and define subinvolution. List the symptoms. How is this treated? What surgical procedure might be needed?
What functional role do the “distal histidine” and the “proximal histidine” play in the function of hemoglobin and oxygen (O2) binding and release?
suppose you found that molecule A, which had a molecular mass of 1500 daltons, was able to penetrate the channels of a gap junction, but molecule B, whose molecular mass was only 1200 daltons, was unable to diffuse between the same cells. how migh..
The restriction enzyme ECOR I cuts DNA leaving 5' overhangs, Pst I leaves 3' overhangs after cutting DNA and SMA I leaves blunt ends on the fragments it produces.Indicate wheter DNA ligase can join the pieces of DNA.
What is Red Queen evolution and how does it apply to the search images of predators and the camouflage patterns of prey? Discuss in the context of specific experimental studies.
