You know that one problem that the Proble's meadow jumping mice (species 1) face is competition from meadow mice (species 2). your painstaking experiments estimate a1,2= 0.6 and a2,1 = 0.5 in natural open space and a1,2= 2.2 and a2,1 = 0.3 in distrubed and fragmented habitats.

B. You have chosen a nice natural area that is well protected from human disturbances for your introduction. To estimate the carrying capacity of the area, you conduct a mark-recapture study on the meadow mice that are present. You capture and mark 40 mice, release them, recapture 100 mice, 5 of which are marked. What is your estimate of the population size (and thus the carrying capacity) in that area? (show your work)

C. You decide it would be prudent to reduce the population of the meadow mice before releasing your preble's mice. You decide upon reducing the population to 400 meadow mice. You estimate that r for preble's mouse is .33. If you release your 100 mice in this situation will their population grow or decline and how rapidly? (i.e. What is dnN1/dt)
