An axial strain gauge and a transverse strain gauge are mounted to the top surface of a steel beam that experiences a uniaxial stress of 150 MPa. The gauges are connected to arms 1 and 2 (see Figure) of a Wheatstone bridge. With a purely axial load applied, determine the bridge constant for the measurement system. If δE0 = 250 mV and Ei = 10 V. Assume Poisson's ratio is 0.3 and the modulus of elasticity is 200 GPa

a) Estimate the average gauge factor of the strain gauges

b) Determine the axial strain induced in the beam

c) A 100 N.m bending moment is applied at the center of the beam, suggest an arrangement of these two strain gauges to measure the bending
