The total energy of the Earth is in a steady state. This means that the fl ux of solar radiation absorbed by the Earth equals that emitted as thermal radiation.

(a) Assuming that the average surface temperature of the Earth is about 288 K, estimate the amount of thermal radiation emitted by the Earth per second.

(b) Assuming that the temperature of the solar radiation is 6000 K, estimate the total rate of entropy due to the thermal radiation flux through the Earth.
