1. In recent times, it has become fashionable for every African country to claim that with the introduction "multiparty elections" and the establishment of rule of law they have become "democratic." From the lecture notes, tell me the historical context that may have spurred this move toward democratization and the establishment of rule of law in present-day Africa?

2. In the lecture notes, I make the observation that both the first and second decades of political independence in Africa were characterized predominantly by a practice of politics that I describe as "Presidential Monarchism" or "Political Authoritarianism." What are the features ofthis model or practice of politics?

3. What do I mean, when I say that under "Presidential Monarchism, or "Political Authoritarianism" the exclusive claims to power and rulership makes the practice of politics in Africa a "zero-sum game?"
