The Cuyahoga River Fire of 1969 served as a wake-up call for the whole country, bringing to light the severe impacts that are associated with environmental deterioration. The National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) was enacted in 1970 as a direct result of this occurrence, which drove its passage. This policy was a crucial first step towards environmental preservation and sustainability since it required the federal government to examine the impact that planned projects would have on the environment before such projects could be implemented. In addition to this, it established the Council on Environmental Quality, which was tasked with evaluating the state of the environment and providing guidance to the President on matters pertaining to the environment.
