The purpose of Part I of this application is for you to begin to use the case analysis/problem solving process used throughout this course. Since this is initially only a proposal, the implementation portion cannot yet be written. This application is an attempt for you to practice, try, establish your own leadership skills. You will be asked to submit a proposal that describes a problem situation at work, preferably, or in some other aspect of your life that is outside your job description and area of normal responsibilities. It will require other people who can be convinced that they, too, consider the situation to be a problem and is also outside their required activities. You will then create a tentative definition of this problem, identify your tentative goal, develop at least three legitimate solutions that you might consider, and determine which one might be your best option to implement at this time.
All four of these steps are tentative at this time as they likely will change when you involve the other members that will comprise the team you are creating for dealing with this problem situation.
1. Review case analysis format and problem-solving process, and textbook’s description of leadership.
2. Prepare a brief report (2-3 pages) that describes a specific problem situation that is important to you that you would like to resolve. This could be a job situation that requires you to get others to think and behave more creatively and effectively or it could be a personal situation in your job or daily life that you would like to change, and for which problem solving and leadership action on your part would be helpful. Be sure to show how you are applying problem solving and leadership concepts. Note: Leadership requires other people are involved with and concerned about the need to change the present situation.
3. Describe a plan of action you will take to involve and motivate other people to operationalize your problem-solving attempt. How will you know you have been effective? What actual changes will indicate success? It is important to emphasize that this project involves something that you initiate or take the lead in doing rather than some aspect of a job assignment given to you.
