Purpose. To establish the organization, procedures and responsibilities of the lookout watch program onboard USS HARRY S. TRUMAN (CVN 75) per references (a) through (d).

Discussion. A lookout watch must always be maintained when underway. A proper lookout is an experienced and qualified Sailor assigned the sole duty of lookout, both visually and aurally. This fact does not exclude any person on watch in a topside area from assisting designated lookouts by reporting to the Officer of the Deck (00D) any observed hazards to navigation, marine mammals, persons or objects in the water. This guidance is particularly applicable during periods of low visibility, operations in restricted waters, sea and anchor detail, during search and rescue operations, and than overboard evolutions.
