Question: The West was far more accepting of diverse cultures than the east. Freedman, looking to establish new homes away from the south went west hoping to settle land. The Homestead Act (as well as the 1866 Civil Rights Act) allowed every American including Freedmen to settle 160 acres of land. While comparatively a small population compared to white settlers. Freedman settled made an impact on the settling of the American West.

Chinese immigrants also were involved in the settling of the American West. By far the most impactful thing they did was helping to build the Western part of the transcontinental railroad. Most of the Chinese population came to America through San Francisco and that impact can still be seen today in the Chinatown neighborhood of San Francisco.

And no topic of diversity in the west can be discussed without mentioning Native Americans. As the Native Americans were pushed West due to American Expansion. Their population began to concentrate in the American West. Their influence can still be felt in the West as you can see from a 2016 map of Indian Lands in the United States. Most, if not all, are in the West.
