Law is based on principles and regulations that establish formal procedures, give protection, and regulate particular behaviors or activities. In contrast, morality refers to what people perceive to be right or wrong, fair and unfair while ethics is the intersection where our morality converges. As such, the values an individual believes in define their morality which is in turn refined and forms the person's basis of ethics. That said, ethics is the foundation of law which in that case law encompasses ethics that are derived from shared moral principles (Horner, 2003). In addition, laws are consistent with the morals, ethics, and values of the community. However, despite the complex association of law, ethics, and morality they are different in that morals and ethics refer to standards of behavior that do not have legal punishments while laws refer to official codes of conduct that carry a punishment in case of violations these codes. Ideally, there are instances where some of the laws of the community are inconsistent with the morals and ethics of the community. What do you think? How are morals and ethics inconsistent to community laws?
