The Challenge of Change
While speaking about the China-Australia free trade agreement, Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull suggested that Australia must utilise the knowledge of its workforce, rather than selling commodities to remain prosperous:
"Our greatest natural assets are not below the ground but walking around on top of it and every sinew of national policy must be dedicated to the vision of ensuring that our human capital becomes the smartest and nimblest to take advantage of the massively expanded global market." (Turnbull, 2015)
There is a general consensus about the importance of knowledge workers and developing human capital. However, the reality is that some organisations are challenged by the potential for loss of capability, focusing instead on knowledge management and knowledge capture. Does building individual capability conflict with building organisational capability?
In your answer consider the following:
· Possible reasons for organisations to fear losing the knowledge of employees
· The potential risks of focusing on knowledge capture, rather than individual development
· Important implications for developing human capital and organisational capability in today's organisations
