Assignment Task 1: The value of Engineering Geology- Essay
This exercise is designed to give you a better understanding about the value of engineering geology. Students need to write an essay discussing the following points:
1. The importance of Engineering Geology to civil engineering and construction projects
2. The importance of an interdisciplinary approach to design of construction projects
3. Why engineers need to understand the terminology of engineering geology and how to obtain geological information.
4. Why engineers need to understand the concept of "change through time" as relevant to engineering geology
Assignment Task 2: Case Study-Report
An article that provides an interesting case study and clearly emphasizes geology in an engineering context will be provided by the instructor. It will give you the opportunity to explore a real engineering case study, understand it and present it to your peers.
Students need to write a report (one per group) to be given as an oral presentation with illustrations for the class. Each of your colleagues in class should receive a one-page summary handout highlighting the main features of your case study. All presentations must be given using a Power Point platform.
Read ALL of the following questions before proceeding. Then, read the provided article. Then, write the answers to the questions as you find them. Whenever applicable, support your answers with any relevant tables/figures/diagrams.
1. Describe the engineering project providing, if available, the location, the purpose, the cost, the duration, etc.
2. List all the geological terms that you encounter in this article and define them.
3. Summarize the geological setting and features of the construction site.
4. How much time elapsed between completion of the project and the occurrence of the geological failure?
5. Were the designers/engineers aware of the geological hazards of the construction site?
6. Was the occurrence of the geological failure a complete surprise or was there some forewarning? If it was not a surprise, list the times and types of forewarning that were available.
7. Does excellence in engineering design guarantee final success of a project? If not, what additional factors must be considered?
8. If a liability suit evolved from this failure, who would be liable?
