Technology and Social Issues

Instructions

Technology is the application of scientific knowledge for practical purposes which includes the purposeful application of information in the design, production, and utilization of goods and services, and in the organization of human activities.
As you ponder the definition of technology, remember the fact that technology has been a part of human culture since its beginning when early humans created simple tools.

After considering the meaning of technology and its long history, think about ways in which the development of a specific type of technology can effect cultural change. Pick a specific political, cultural, artistic, musical or literary movement (current or historical) to write about in terms of the effect of a specific technology. For example, you could think about the effect of social media on the Arab Spring or the effect of televised images of the Vietnam War on the anti-war movement in the late 1960s or the effect of ebooks on the self-publishing movement. In other words, think about the ways in which a specific development in technology changed culture in ways that had not been possible before this technology came about.

After selecting the specific type of technology and cultural movement you want to write about, think about whether or not this type of technology has had a positive or negative effect on the cultural movement. Take a position on the positive or negative effect of this specific technology on the specific cultural movement. Then, demonstrate your position using specific examples (the more, the better). Use evidence to back up your position, including at least one properly cited reference.Evaluate the reference based on criteria found at: After taking and supporting your position, think of arguments against your viewpoint. Include an opposing argument that is meaningful, relevant and clearly stated.

In conclusion, offer a successful rebuttal that directly address the objection to your position.

Be sure that you have included all of these 5 required elements:

1) A specific political, cultural, artistic, musical or literary movement (current or historical)

2) A specific kind of technology (social media, electricity, digital photography, synthesized musical instruments, etc.) If you choose an aspect of the Internet, be sure to designate a specific aspect such as social media, software, search engines, cloud computing, etc.

3) A position on the positive or negative effects of the specific technology on the specific movement.

4) An objection to your position.

5) A rebuttal to the objection to your position.
