Assignment Task: Write a persuasive essay on what is likely the most important crisis facing our country and our planet today: climate change. You will write about it from the point of view of the political group you have been assigned to.
Green Party Group: This is the most environmentally aware political party and they will have very strong policies in favor of turning things around before it's too late
I want you to argue in favor of a policy (a bill or a law) that would be supported by the group you have been assigned to. This requires you to become very familiar with your party's platform and to find a bill or a law on the Robb Library Page.
5 pages + a bibliography with at least 12 legitimate sources.
Your paper must contain the following headings:
Introduction: Introduce which group you are in and describe what their positions are in general on various issues including climate change. For example: "I am in the left-wing group and we hold the following positions...."
Main Position: This section will discuss only climate change. This section is where you will choose your main topic and you will write a persuasive essay to convince your reader that your position is the correct one based on facts, evidence, data and research using the Pierce College library. For example: "As a Green Party member we believe the government must help the economy switch to a solar based energy system and...."
History of your position: Include a very brief history of your position and of the history of climate change in the United States. You can include global challenges if you'd like. Write about previous environmental laws and protection. Briefly go into the history and tie it to the current position of your group.
Opposing Position: Who opposes your position? If you are in the Green or Democratic group, then the Republicans and Libertarians will oppose your position. Why do they oppose it and why is your position right and theirs wrong? Really delve into this with some research and try to understand the opposing viewpoint. You will explain in a respectful manner why they hold this opposing position but why your position is the correct one using data, evidence and research.
Fake v. Real News: You will include a few paragraphs on how to tell real from fake news and how you are sure that you have chosen legitimate news sources. Even if you represent a group that supports conspiracy theories, I want you to tell me if their information was gathered from legitimate sources or not and how you can tell. Use the Pierce Library information on fake news for this section.
