This essay is an Argumentative Essay.

The essay must be double-spaced, use 12-point Times font, and be formatted with 1" margins. It should be 5-6 pages long.

This essay is an Argumentative Essay. The goal of this essay is to argue for real change in the world. The intention and purpose should be for an existent problem to concretely change in the manner outlined in your essay. So, please argue for a topic that you care about deeply, in which you have a real stake beyond this class, this paper, and your resultant grade. In short: write with your life.

You have a great deal of freedom in choosing what you will argue in an essay that may range from 5-6 pages.

Your essay should:

Speak to an issue that is real and pressing and powerful. Your essay should tell your reader something new. Your thesis should be radical, in the sense that it is not commonly stated. Even if you write about a "familiar" topic, your essay should approach it differently. Use the essays we have read thus far in our class as guides.

Your essay must include:

In the first paragraph, a unique, action-oriented thesis statement (see Dreams and Inward Journeys, Chapter 7). Please restate/rephrase/revisit this thesis in the conclusion paragraph.

A counter-argument 3/4 way through the paper. This is where you consider your most pressing enemy, opponent-in short, your argument's strongest opposition. Really imagine this person on the other side, and talk to this person directly on the page. Acknowledge that you are aware of their side by stating it directly. Then, refute what this side says. Use good argumentative strategies to show why this side is wrong. Don't get angry; simply acknowledge. This makes your own thesis that much stronger.

Consider your audience to be generally educated and diverse - the students in this class and I - and your job as a writer is to both clearly convey the experience and to engage us with the writing, offering a captivating hook or introduction, a logical progression throughout, and a satisfying conclusion that moves from your thesis to a space of possibility and hope.

Please remember:

Through your own writing and reading of course texts (every writer we read is our guide) into a compelling argument / call for change, guided by a thesis statement in the first paragraph.

The best thesis is an

ACTIVE CALL FOR CHANGE THAT INVITES THE READER TO THINK OR ACT IN A NEW WAY.
