Please note that achieving a satisfactory level of written communication (number 2 above) is not merely a matter of avoiding writing errors and ensuring your essay is well structured. While these are very important to the mark you will receive, this assessment also involves such things as avoiding generalisations and fact/inference/opinion confusions, and providing evidence using correct referencing (both in-text and in your reference list) for claims made.

Other points you should take note: Your essay must be structured in a logical and coherent manner (paragraphs must flow on from each other). You must use correct and complete citations in both the body of your essay and in the reference list. Please review the Harvard Referencing Guide before you submit your assignment to avoid loss of marks. Ensure that you have written in an objective and unbiased manner. It is essential that you avoid: Absolute or unsubstantiated statements (saying something without providing evidence) Fact - opinion confusion (make sure something is factual and not just your opinion or one of your source’s opinion). Fact – interference confusion (make sure that you can distinguish between inference and facts). When making assumptions, inferences or opinions, clearly state them as such and ensure that you have explained the reasoning behind them.

You document must be visually well presented. Please format your document to maximise readability by making appropriate use of the following: White space, Emphasis, Font size and style ( font size 12, Arial style recommended). Also take care to follow accepted formatting conventions by paying attention to the following: margin size, page and line breaks, space between paragraphs, heading and/or sub-heading styles (if applicable). Your essay must be written in a clear and concise manner. Avoid mechanics errors (i.e., typographical errors or those relating to punctuation, spelling, proofreading, grammar etc.).
