Essay - Causal Analysis and Proposal Argument
Offer a captivating lead that introduces a social or cultural problem. Consider your audience. Who are they? How can you appeal to them? What values do you share? What is an appropriate tone of voice for them?
Be sure that your essay is guided by a clear claim of policy. Since this is a persuasive essay, you may find it more strategic not to fully slate this claim until the conclusion.
Give a precise, narrow definition of your problem. Who exactly is affected by the problem? What is the worst thing about the problem? Use pertinent facts and statistics. Explain special terms.
Provide a condensed causal analysis of your problem. Organize your analysis carefully. Which causes arc most significant? Use sources appropriately to support your analysis.
The largest pan of your essay should propose a specific solution to your problem. Break your solution into steps. Discuss alternate solutions. Consider all factors involved in your solution: money, law, government, institutions, human nature, etc. Use sources appropriately to support your solution.
Guidelines for Sources: Use at least six authoritative sources: database articles, books, websites, documentaries, interviews, etc. Two of your sources should be con sources, providing counter-arguments that you will need to rebut. Use summary, paraphrase, and direct quotation as necessary. Introduce key sources. Always use in-lest citation. Conclude your essay with a "Works Cited" page an MLA format.
Creatively title your essay to suggest your topic but not fully reveal your argument.
Proposal for Essay -
1. Define the social/cultural problem you hope to solve. Who or what is affected? How bad is the problem? What are its worst consequences?
2. Identify your audience. Who are you trying to persuade with your argument? What does your audience likely know and not know about your subject? What values do you share with your audience?
3. Consider possible causes of the problem. You probably haven't done much research yet, but given your current knowledge, what do you think the most significant causes are?
4. Describe the kinds of sources you will use to support your argument. Mention at least two specific sources-give author and title for each.
