Hypothesis: The situation involves a 61-year-old patient suffering from cancer and admitted to the hospital for palliative care, being a heavy drinker. Alcoholic drinking is not allowed in the ward; however the patient insist on drinking disregarding the nurses demands. The situation requires reconciling the needs of the patient and finding a practical solution as the staff may be overburdened by supporting the patient in this endeavour. Moreover, drinking is not favourable to the health conditions of the patient. This disagreement needs to be resolved with complete consideration of patient rights, law and service. Nursing is a profession where in a relationship of empathy is built between the patient and the nurse. A nurse can help a patient regain the confidence of building a better life despite being ill. At times it does involve going beyond job roles and ensuring maximum comfort to the patient. In this case rehabilitation is essential for the patient than allowing her drink in the ward. The staff can be instrumental in the rehabilitation process as well.
