Assignment:
In a 900 paper, craft an exploratory essay about a current controversial issue (abortion, gun rights, equal rights, misinformation, etc.).
The Allyn & Bacon Guide to Writing defines this essay as narrating "a writer's thinking process while doing research. This essay recounts your attempt to examine your question's complexity, explore alternatives, and arrive at a solution or answer." The main point is to conduct inquiry into a topic, gather information, and share that information with readers.
The important part of this assignment is to remain objective and unbiased. You're researching the issue and presenting both sides equally. If you feel very strongly about one side, you should probably choose another topic. The point is, this is research. The reader should not know which side you're on. You're not persuading. Consider it educating. Consult Purdue Owl for tips.
Two secondary sources are required. Works Cited is required. In performing the exploratory process, your paper will: Set the context - provide general information about the main idea, explaining the situation so the reader can make sense of the topic and the questions you will ask. State why the main idea is important - tell the reader why s/he should care and keep reading. Your goal is to create a compelling, clear, and educational essay people will want to read and act upon. State your research question - compose a question or two that clearly communicate what you want to discover and why you are interested in the topic. An overview of the types of sources you explored might follow your research question. Think about the issue dialectically. Explore the problem and narrate your thinking process. Find relevant sources and create notes. In the end, this process of contemplation and solution will be your final product.
